This week Apple hosted its October 2021 Apple Unleashed Event. It was full of big Apple announcements! If you want to know the most exciting news that came out of the event, keep reading!

Brand New MacBook Pro Design

Users have been waiting for more than 5 years, and it is finally here. Apple’s new MacBook pros will be available in 14 ($1,999) and 16-inch ($2,499) models.

They also will feature a complete design overhaul and a number of intriguing changes. This includes a more squared-off chassis and raised feet.

The screen is bigger and better now that all the bezels measure just 3.5mm. The 14-inch screen features a 3,024 x 1, 964 resolution while the 16.2-inch model’s display resolution is 3,456x 2,234. Additionally, both displays support 120Hz ProMotion, local dimming, 1,000 nits of sustained brightness, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and a 1 million to 1 contrast ratio.

The touch bar will be replaced with a full-size function row. Also, a number of ports are returning. While some value Apple’s complete exclusivity, others have been turned off by the fact that, by design, their products don’t work easily with outside tech.

The newest MacBooks will have an HDMI port, three Thunderbolt ports, a headphone jack, an SD card slot, and the return of the MagSafe charger.

Sound and Vision

Apple also added a notch to the screen with a 1080p webcam. This notch will be hidden and integrated into the menu bar at the top of the macOS interface.

Speaker grills have also returned. Underneath them is a 6 speaker sound system. It has 2 tweeters, 4 woofers, and 2 subs. Apple says that this system delivers 80% more bass and also works with spatial audio.

The new MacBook Pros will be available in new silver and space grey colors. In terms of dimensions, the MacBook Pro 16-inch measures 16.8 mm thick and weighs 4.7 lbs. The 14-inch is 15.5 mm thick and weighs 3.5 lbs.

Apple Has Created Two New Custom Chips

Apple formally announced its next two custom chips. These are the M1 Pro and M1 Max. So far, these chips seem like they will be quite powerful.

Apple says the M1 Pro has more than 33 billion transistors and that the M1 Max has 57 billion transistors. The M1 Pro is the innovated version of last year’s M1 chip, which has a 10 cour CPU and 32 GPU.

It also has up to 32GB of unified memory and 200GBps of memory bandwidth. When translated in terms of power, the M1 Pro has twice the graphical performance of the M1.

The M1 Max is basically an even more powerful M1 processor with 10 CPU cores, 32 GPU cores, 64GB of unified memory, and 200GBps of memory bandwidth.

Apple has made some big claims about these chips. They say that the M1 Max used 70% less power than an 8 core CPU PC and 3.3x times the graphical performance of a high-end laptop.

Something Old, Something New

Apple’s cult-favorite MagSafe magnetic charger is back. Apple is calling them the MagSafe 3 and says that they can charge up to 50% in a half hour.

Almost all tech users know the pain of accidentally tripping over your phone, tablet, or laptop cord and knocking your device onto the floor. With MagSafe magnetic chargers, this is no longer a problem.

MagSafe is a proprietary magnetized power plug that breaks away from the computer — so if you trip over the power cord, you don’t take the laptop down with you.

These chargers were introduced in 2006 and Apple started phasing them out in 2015. It has been rumored that they would come back for more than a year.

Also, the new MacBook Pros make use of Apple’s adaptive refresh rate technology, ProMotion. ProMotion tops out at 120Hz refresh rates. The new MacBook Pros will also be lit by Mini LEDs.

Apple To Release AirPods 3

Apple has also launched a new and improved version of its Airpods headphones. These look more or less like the AirPods Pro, but they do not have interchangeable tips. Instead, Apple says they will offer a “universal fit.” They also will not have ANC and Transparency Mode.

The new AirPods, called AirPods 3, support spatial audio and are both sweat and water-resistant. However, Apple has not said what its IP rating is. They will sell for $179.

Apple also claims the AirPods 3 have far extended battery life. They say they have an extended battery life of 6 hours, with a total listening time of 30 hours. Five minutes of charging will give users a full hour of use too. They are also compatible with Apple’s MagSafe charging system.

The HomePod Mini In New Colors

In addition, Apple is releasing the HomePod Mini in some new fall-appropriate colors. They will be available starting in November in yellow, orange, and blue. The HomePod Mini will sell for $99.

The New HomePod Minis are functionally the same as the ones released in 2020, which were only available in black and white. They will, however, have new color LEDs on the top. This is essentially Apple’s take on the mini Bluetooth speaker.

The Apple Music Voice Plan

Apple has also launched a new Apple Music Voice Plan. This will enable users to access Apple Music Playlists with Siri. It will cost $4.99 monthly and be available later this fall in nearly 20 countries.

This subscription does lack a few major features. These include lyrics, music videos, the ability to download songs, and using spatial audio and lossless features.

Another limitation is that users will only be able to listen to Apple Music on Apple devices. For example, Amazon Echo devices will not have access to it.

However, a positive is that Apple will finally offer curated Playlists as Spotify does. Siri will be updated to deliver curated playlists based on activities and moods. These include playlists for relaxing, working out, dinner parties, and more.

Usually, accessing Apple’s full music catalog costs $9.99 a month. The idea behind this new plan is that users will be able to ask Siri to play songs from specific playlists for only $4.99 monthly.

Final Thoughts

Apple is releasing a lot of new and interesting things this autumn! It seems like almost all of their products are getting a makeover on some level. We are seeing new MacBooks, processing chips, AirPods, HomePod Minis, and more.
