This Is How I Stay Motivated Every Single Day

I was recently asked an interesting question, how do I stay motivated to work on days that I don’t want to get out of bed?

My first thought, which was selfish, was that, hey, I am always getting out of bed excited. If you’re not pumped up, you’re doing something you do not want to do!

However, that isn’t the right thing to say, nor in-fact, true.

I’ve had days I did not want to get out of bed.

This isn’t to say that I do not love what I do.

Oh hell no, this is my purpose, the reason why I get to do what I do is because it drives me more than anything else.

I’m beyond lucky to do what I love, my passion, my reason for living.

However, sometimes, you still do not want to get out of bed.

The night where you only managed two-three hours of sleep before having to get up.

The meeting you have to deal with, that you aren’t looking forward to having.

Knowing you need to fire someone when you wake up, or make a decision that will negatively impact someone.

All things that can make you not want to get out of bed.

So, how do I?

What keeps me going?

It’s the response I gave that the other individual was not expecting, nor I bet, you are expecting either.

What keeps me going, in these times, is routine.

It is the habits I have formed.

For context, let’s take the gym.

I workout every single day.

The only time I will ever skip now is if I am too sick to go (or a real emergency requiring my attention).

That is it.

Other than that, no excuse.

It’s raining and I need to walk to the gym?

Tough crap. I am going.

I am feeling tired as it’s been a long morning with a bunch of meetings?

Oh well. I am going.

I have worked out ten days straight, I deserve some rest?

Shut it and go to the gym.

I just got back from a cross-country business trip?

Stop it and go to the gym.

You see, the habit of going to the gym enforces me to go even more.

It’s become a routine for me. It’s the same as brushing my teeth or taking a shower.

If I break that habit, that routine, it will become a cycle of doing the same, over and over. I am breaking my own self-discipline.

I’ll start feeling so bad that I am missing the gym, that I won’t want to go the gym because I feel so bad.

I am breaking my own decision in the first place to want to be healthy, to go. I am letting short-term decisions decide my long-term goals and desired outcomes.

This is the same as how I stay motivated on days that motivation may lack more than normal when it comes to work.

I remind myself, that if you let yourself get into the habit of skipping, or not giving it your all, or just not caring, for that one instance, it will have a compounding effect for the future. It will become your new norm.

It will enforce a mindset of well, I won’t go today, or I will give myself a day off.

That isn’t why I am an entrepreneur or how I want to live my life.

It isn’t getting me closer to my desired outcome.

It isn’t letting me get to where I want to go.

It is getting me a very short, small feeling of complacency, followed by an immediate feeling of crap because I did the wrong thing, I made the wrong choice for myself, and worse, taking away why I am working so hard to begin with for the long term.

That is how I get through every day and keep my motivation as is.

I have no choice.

I want to see my long term vision, my purpose for living, what makes me the most happy, stay as is and get me closer to those desired outcomes.

I do not want to give in to temporary temptation.

I do not want to let a short-term emotional state dictate what I want to accomplish in the long-run, disappoint those who are counting on me, or worse, disappoint myself.

We are all human, and anyone who claims they do not experience this, in anything in their life, is lying to you.

However, being honest to yourself, by reminding yourself why you are in this, why you are doing this, what you are trying to accomplish, is the kick in the butt you need in times like this.

In the long-run, your future self will always thank your present self.

    Awesome post!

    Although I have read many times over the years the importance of having routines, AM and PM, I never put in the work to set up that discipline. I decided that 2017 was not going to be the same so I got a jump start on it a week before the new year and haven’t looked back. I am nearing my first month of diligently following my routine and expanding it as needed and so glad I did because it truly is the key to staying motivated and pressing on day by day because the progress shows.

    Aside from the gym portion of your routine that you mentioned, what else is included in your routine?

    I’ve been blogging for a number of years now and sometimes it is difficult to stay motivated.

    I think for most people, keep repeating the same thing is a problem.

    But one thing that keeps me going is, I set goals for myself each week and try to improve. It keeps me going even after a major failure.
