Steps Insitu

Health Care Training

Jason Burgess, the founder of Steps Insitu has been a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for over eighteen years. As a current and active Neonatal Resuscitation Provider instructor, he has trained countless medical providers on how to handle mega code situations.

Jason has a wealth of experience in training and educating new nurses. He trains them on how to handle emergency situations and high-stress environments all within the NICU, all while teaching the value of teamwork.

The goal of mock codes is for trainees to perform in situations that are as close to real events as possible. This allows the trainees to make mistakes and learn from them in realistic scenarios. They can also learn how to respond using the equipment that is required for these situations. Since Jason wants his trainees to immerse themselves and make sure that the training is consistent, he has found a need for a technical assistant. Steps Insitu is the technical assistant that Jason needed to supplement his training program. Through this digital application, Jason intends to produce more prepared nurses, better-trained staff, and enforce teamwork and communication.

Steps Insitu serves as a dashboard for trainers to use to monitor learners’ actions and display outcomes while recording these actions for the team to debrief at the completion of the scenario. Because there are so many possible mock code scenarios, Jason sought to create an application that hospitals can pay into to educate trainees.

The finished application will also help enforce teamwork between units. Additionally, one of the application’s priorities is to improve trainees’ critical thinking skills so they can feel ready to tackle new scenarios. For the instructors, the Steps Insitu application will serve as a tool to better monitor their trainees, hold them accountable and display the results from their test runs. For hospitals, it will serve as a platform to keep training up to current standards, all while making the logistics of it all much easier.

Steps Insitu was designed to be built as a web-based and tablet-based application using React Native and with REST APIs, supporting iOS 11, iOS 12, and Android 8, Android 9. For the administrator and server-side, we will be programming with PHP with Laravel.
