And it is all thanks to one brand that has been around since the 1950s, Mister Softee. Mister Softee is the largest franchiser of soft ice cream trucks in the United States. With over 600 trucks and over 350 franchises operating in fifteen different states (plus internationally), Mister Softee is more than just a brand. They’re a staple in modern day culture and a classic fixture to any child’s, family’s, or adult’s summer.
Of course, it is a huge accomplishment to be a brand for over sixty years. That doesn’t just happen by luck. And it doesn’t just happen because of good timing. It is because Mister Softee is a very well-run business that consistently adapts to new generations of customers, growing trends, and opportunities. This brings us to today, as Mister Softee prepares to win over a new generation of summer-goers, ice cream lovers, and frozen treat fanatics down by the beaches, in the cities, and all across the United States.
Mister Softee wants to reach their next generation of customers through mobile. Understanding that almost every child, teenager, and adult has a smartphone at their disposal, Mister Softee wanted to leverage this opportunity. Mister Softee wanted to create a mobile application that will allow anyone to see, in real-time, where a truck is, where it is going, and how close it is to them. Customers will potentially never miss their favorite ice cream truck again. They can track where a truck is and receive notifications when one is nearby. Trucks will be using geolocation devices and connect to customers’ geolocations at home or on the go.
The mobile application also provides a localized menu for each region that Mister Softee serves. Customers have the chance to pick out which menu items they want in advance. The mix of these two incredible functionalities means that Mister Softee franchises can see an increase in revenue from more informed customers. Furthermore, franchises will enjoy a quicker turnaround at each location since customers will be better prepared to order. This will lead to quicker lines, more returning customers over the course of a season, and better experiences. This equals more revenue and happier customers!
To manage the trucks on the road, manage regional menus, and gauge how their application is performing, Chop Dawg provided Mister Softee with an admin backend that is easy to use. This admin backend can be accessed through a desktop device. Mister Softee can also use the admin backend to create custom push notifications based on region. They can also leverage the use of MailChimp to send targeted email notifications to their loyal fans.
Finally, Mister Softee had Chop Dawg overhaul their company website to match the branding and modern technology expectations from today’s consumers (and match their new mobile app). This website is built on a customizable WordPress backend, allowing Mister Softee to easily keep it up to date. It will be fully responsive so it will look good no matter the device. The website also serves to keep customers in the know-how about the Mister Softee brand and encourage them to engage through social media. Chop Dawg also provided Mister Softee with new graphics to use on their social media to reflect their famous branding.
Mister Softee was built as an iPhone and Android application using React Native and with REST APIs, supporting iOS 11, 12, 13, 14 and Android 8, Android 9, Android 10. For the administrator and server-side, we used PHP with Laravel, built on React.
