Don’t fall into the trap of comparing your business

Operations & Management

Joshua Davidson wrote this article

One of my favorite analogies to growing a business is this:

You’re driving a car.

You’re ahead of everyone else on the road.

You can now do one of two things.

1) You can look in the rearview mirror to see where everyone else on the road is or

2) You can keep looking straight ahead

What happens if you choose the first option, looking into the rear view mirror and seeing where everyone else is at? You give them the chance to catch up to you.

You keep focused and straight ahead, you’re in complete control of your destiny. Nothing is stopping you from continuing to move forward.

This is the business in a nutshell.

Time and time again, I meet too many successful executives, running growing companies and large enterprises, comparing themselves to another company. Wondering why they haven’t had the same success as them in the short amount of time they have. They get jealous. They get frustrated. They look in the rear-review mirror.

Stop this.

Kevin Kruse, a recent guest of ours on #thePawdcast (which you can listen to his episode here) talked about this very subject. He discussed how when he was on the Inc 500 list, he would get pissed off when companies were ahead of his, or worse when he found younger entrepreneurs and founders who had even more income, more net worth than him, quicker than he was able to reach it.

He admitted it was foolish.

He wasn’t focusing on what was most important, continuing to grow his company, make his customers happy, create as much value as possible and build an incredible team.

You need to do the same.

It’s human DNA to keep up with the Jones, that the grass is always greener on the other side mentality.

We need to stop this.

We as executives of growing companies need to stay in our lane, looking ahead, going as fast as possible. We control our destinies unless we stop giving ourselves the ability to do so.

Stop comparing yourself to others, stop defining yourself by others and start focusing on you, your company, your customers, your clients, yourself. Stop falling into the terrible trap of comparing your business to another business and instead, keep looking straight ahead at the road in front of you. You’ll always end up better off.
