“EVERYTHING SEEMS SO NEW”
Although Herschel had left
before the 1983 season--and the core of the freshman class of 1980 departed
before the 1984 season--Kevin Butler was still kicking between the hedges, and
his winning kick against Clemson early in the season still stands as one of
Munson’s greatest calls ever. The DAWGS
offense caught fire midway through the season—Butler set a record as the DAWGS hung sixty
on Vandy--then cooled off late in the year during
three tough defeats. Hope for the future
was found in the 1984 Citrus Bowl against Florida State—this
game ranks as one of the unknown Munson classics (anybody know who “Gary,”
Munson’s sidekick for this broadcast, was?).
The season ended almost as it had begun, with Kevin Butler lining up a
60+ yard field goal as time ran out.
