If you’re a Munson fan and a DAWG fan, 1978 might be one of your favorite years.  It’s the Year of the Wonderdawgs: after a woeful 1977 season (Dooley’s only losing season in Athens), expectations were low.  But these DAWGS—with youngsters like Rex Robinson, Buck Belue, Lindsay Scott, Eddie Weaver, and Scott Woerner—served notice early, with a couple of upset wins over strong teams from Baylor and Clemson.  Listen to Munson’s broadcast highlights of the early games to hear the surprise and excitement growing in his voice (“…and again, it was done when somebody really racked somebody”).  If you’re looking for a turning point to this amazing season, check the LSU game, especially Lindsay Scott’s return of the second-half kickoff; you can almost feel the momentum shifting even now, 28 years later.   Everyone’s familiar with Rex Robinson’s last second field goal that gave us a huge comeback win in Lexington; here, you’ll discover what happened in that game, before the defining moment, and you’ll understand what a great comeback it really was.  Munson’s an artist, the best of his time at his craft, and at no time is this more evident than in the “brutal, grim” 1978 Auburn game, with the “defense stiffening just enough, but not enough.” (Trust me, you’ve never heard the highlights from this game, ever: want to hear Loran get excited on the sideline?  Check it out!)  The season ended, of course, with maybe the absolute best Tech game in history (“…fourth down!...what a year”).  In a year when nothing was expected, we came within a flea-flicker of winning the SEC, and these Munson highlights represent some of his best work.  Pour your favorite beverage, scroll up or down the player list to find your favorite game, click & enjoy!
